Sarawak Launches Its First Mega Methanol Plant On Historic Sarawak Day

BINTULU, 22 July — Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, proudly inaugurated the Sarawak Methanol Complex today.

As the first mega methanol plant developed and built by a Sarawakian entity, this state-of-the-art facility marks a significant milestone in the region's pursuit of sustainable development and technological advancement.

"On this historic Sarawak Day, I am honoured to be here to officiate at the launching of this Sarawak Methanol Complex," said the Premier. "This complex symbolizes our collective effort and commitment towards sustainable development and technological innovation."

The Sarawak Methanol Complex represents a major investment in the state, expected to act as a catalyst for economic development, job creation, sustainable growth, and social inclusivity.

The Premier highlighted other key projects, including the H2ornbill and H2biscus projects in Bintulu, which he hopes will materialize before 2030 to further bolster the manufacturing sector.

The Premier emphasized that the realization of the Sarawak Methanol Complex marks Sarawak's entry into the petrochemical industry and its emergence as a significant player in the global methanol market. With an annual production capacity of up to 1.75 million metric tons of methanol, Sarawak is set to become one of the global methanol producers.

During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was exchanged between Sarawak Petchem and Petros. In addition to the current gas supply allocated for the Sarawak Methanol Plant Project, Petros will provide an additional 160 MMSCFD of natural gas to Sarawak Petchem, integral to the Sarawak Gas Roadmap for the new Low Carbon Ammonia and Urea Plant Project.

Sarawak Petchem is also exploring other opportunities to diversify its portfolio and promote green energy adoption. The Premier reaffirmed Sarawak's commitment to low carbon solutions and accelerating the transition to a high-value green economy as outlined in the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

With various multi-billion-dollar flagship projects in Bintulu, Sarawak is poised to become a regional green energy hub, spurring rapid economic activities and profitable ventures.
